Extensions: Quarkus Plugins as Hyperspace Modules

One of the key reasons Quarkus achieves such fast startup times is its extension model. Instead of relying on heavy, generic runtime mechanisms, Quarkus uses purpose-built extensions that act like “plugins” — but with deep integration into the build process. These extensions perform most of their work at build time, including configuration, dependency wiring, and metadata generation. As a result, when the application starts, there’s very little left to do. It’s similar to equipping a ship with pre-calibrated hyperspace modules: everything is prepared in advance, so the jump can happen instantly. This design minimizes reflection, avoids runtime scanning, and keeps the runtime as lean as possible — all contributing to Quarkus’s near-instant startup.
